Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. PNG Namura Timuza

With three, going on four, cafes in the Milwaukee, WI area and roasting coffee since 1999, Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. is a mainstay of the Milwaukee specialty coffee scene. I’ve really enjoyed the coffees they’ve sent me (links below to all the reviews in this series!) and I’m finishing this excellent roaster out with their current selection from Papua New Guinea. Let’s check it out!

ANODYNE COFFEE ROASTERS PNG NAMURA TIMUZA

This morning’s coffee is from the Timuza cooperative located near the town of Kainantu in the Eastern Highlands region of Namura. Coffee is grown in 15 of the 19 provinces of PNG and it is estimated that half of the country’s rural population is directly involved in coffee production! The Timuza co-op has around 200 members who grow coffee on small 1-2 hectare plots. This is a washed coffee consisting of Arusha, Mundo Novo and Typica varieties grown in the 1420-1600masl range. This coffee is also certified organic by the USDA. Anodyne gives us flavor notes of, “mandarin orange, apple cider, strawberry jam” which certainly sounds interesting!

I used my standard pourover method of a 1:16 ratio of 28g of coffee to 450g of water in a notNeutral Gino dripper. I used a Handground grinder set on 3 and Third Wave Water in my preparation of this coffee. This cup is on the heavier side of medium as far as body goes and it has a slightly dry mouthfeel overall, for me. Strawberry jam is a perfect descriptor for this coffee and it has a lot of it! It’s not like the fresh strawberry notes that come through in a lot of natural Ethiopian coffees, but rather a sweeter, more sugary confection version of strawberry, like jam is. It’s really delicious in this coffee. There is a light citrus acidity as well as an apple juice-like malic acidity in the cup for me. The acidity is there for balance, although there is a nice high note in this coffee from it, too. Primarily, though, this coffee is sweet and jammy for me and the acidity does a nice job of keeping all that sugariness from being cloying. This is a very clean coffee and the flavors are nicely structured. As it cools, I get a little hint of lemon in the acidity that is really pleasant, too.

This is a wonderful coffee. It’s sweet and clean and has really nice balance. The strawberry jam note makes me think I’ve just eaten a slice of toast with strawberry preserves on it. This is one of the most inviting, approachable, easy to drink coffees that I’ve had in a long time!

Love my fellow Midwest aficionados! (Hosier Pride here.) If you like Anodyne, you should check out their Guatemala Atitlan – all kinds of chocolatey, nutty goodness. Great on pourover, but I’ve also pulled shots with it and enjoy it that way.
