Epic Bean Coffee Honduras COMSA Marcala

Epic Bean Coffee out of Maryland has come up with a nice, basic roast on this Honduran coffee. This is a versatile coffee for roasters because I’ve had this same coffee from S&W Craft Roasting that they specifically produced for espresso use. Of course, different roast profiles will pull different characteristics out of coffees, so it’s always interesting for me to compare the same coffee in the hands of different roasters! You can buy this coffee directly from Epic Bean Coffee as a single bag or on subscription for $12.50/bag (slightly less for subscribers).

This coffee comes from the COMSA cooperative in Marcala, Honduras. This cooperative is certified organic by Bio Latina and is also fair trade certified. I don’t actually have a ton to say about this coffee, but I did enjoy drinking it as both pourover and AeroPress, with the AeroPress enhancing the brightness of this coffee a little. And S&W’s espresso version was great! I gave away my excess beans from this bag so I wasn’t able to test Epic’s version as espresso, unfortunately.

This coffee has some caramel aromas, a lot of milk chocolate in the flavor and is definitely balanced toward sweetness. That being said, there is nice citric acidity to lift the sweetness some and lend some complexity to this coffee. It has a creamy, round mouthfeel although I did find the finish to be on the dry side. This COMSA from Epic Bean isn’t going to win any prizes for complexity, but it’s a simple and easy to drink morning brew and I think they did a great job with the roast. This is coffee that tastes like coffee, friends! 🙂

I looked at a couple websites and couldn’t see anything available right now. They’ve been all the rage this year but they aren’t super common, so you’ll just have to keep your eyes peeled.
