Manzanita Roasting Co. is located on the grounds of the 125-year-old Bernardo Winery in San Diego. Good digs for good coffee! Weston and Sam Nawrocki bring their culinary and wine backgrounds to coffee and whenever they ask if they can send something my way, of course I say yes! Today we have a fresh Colombia from the Huila district to check out, so without further ado…

MANZANITA ROASTING CO. COLOMBIA SOLEIM ERAZO MUNOZ

This morning’s coffee is a selection from San Agustin in the Huila district of Colombia. This area is known for it’s pre-Colombian archaeological sites and, of course, its coffee! This particular coffee comes from Soleim Erazo Munoz’s farm, Finca El Recuerdo. This is Caturra variety grown at 1700 meters above sea level and, as you’d expect from Colombia, it’s a washed/wet process coffee. Wes gives us flavor notes of, “blood orange, creamy and rich.”

I used my standard 1:16 ratio of 28g of coffee to 450g of water in my notNeutral Gino with Kalita 185 filters. This resulted in a nice, citrus-forward type of flavor profile that I really love in a Colombian coffee. I would call this a medium-heavy body with a lot of presence on my palate. There is definitely a lot of orange/citric acidity to the cup, which tastes awesome, and that type of acidity, for me, tends to really “drill” into my taste buds, giving coffee a lot of presence and weight on my palate even if the mouthfeel itself is lighter. All that citrus comes with a lot of sweetness, so it’s quite balanced, and I was also getting some baking spice-like notes in the second half of the sip. The finish is slightly sweet but the coffee does leave a little dryness on my palate in the aftertaste.

This is a nice, bright coffee and I love that in Colombian selections. There is a ton of orange character in this cup, so if you’ve ever wondered “what does orange taste like in the context of coffee” then this would be a coffee you could calibrate with. TONS of orange! That orange juiciness just makes me want to keep taking sips and especially as the coffee cooled down a lot I found myself gulping this one! Very inviting! Very nice selection and roasting from Wes and Sam!
